Respondent experience settings
Classic or one-question-at-a-time layout, progress, save and continue later, collecting an email, receipts, editing after submit and more.
Where the settings are
Select Form settings at the top of the outline (or click the form title on the canvas) to see the settings panel. The groups Respondent experience and Responses control what people see and do. These settings are part of the form definition, so they take effect when you publish.
Layout
Classic shows a whole page of questions at once. One at a time shows a single question per screen, moves on with Enter, and has previous and next buttons. Use it for short, conversational forms; use Classic for long forms where people want to scan ahead. One at a time is a plan feature, described in Default plan limits.
- Show progress turns the progress indicator on or off.
- Shuffle questions randomises the order within each page, so each respondent gets a different order.
- Submit button label replaces the word "Submit" (up to 40 characters).
Save and continue later
Save progress is on by default. While a respondent fills in the form, their answers are saved to the server as a draft response, and a copy stays in their browser. If they come back on the same device, they pick up where they stopped.
A Save and continue later link at the bottom of the form asks for an email address and sends a link back to the exact place they stopped. The link works from any device. Unfinished drafts nobody returns to are deleted after 30 days.
These partial responses are kept apart from finished ones. In Responses you can show them with Completed and partial, and they count towards the completion rate but not the response total.
Turn Save progress off when you would rather store nothing until someone submits.
Email addresses and receipts
Collect email adds a "Your email" field on the last page. Choose Don't collect, Optional or Required. The address is stored with the response and shows in the table and exports.
Email a copy to respondents sends the respondent a receipt with their answers. It needs a collected email address and a plan that includes receipts. The email lists up to 60 answers.
After they submit
- Allow editing after submit adds an Edit your response button to the ending, which opens the submitted answers for changes. Quizzes cannot be edited after submitting, because that would reopen the answer key.
- Show "Submit another response" adds a link that starts a fresh response. For quizzes, the same link reads "Try again" and depends on the Allow retakes setting instead. When you limit a form to one response per person, the link is not shown.
- Show results summary to respondents adds a "How everyone answered" section to the ending, with percentages for choice questions and averages for number-type questions.
Anti-spam checks
You do not configure these, but you should know they exist. Public forms carry a hidden field that real people never fill in; a submission that fills it in looks successful and is discarded. Submitting within a moment of the page loading is rejected with a "very quick" message. Saving, submitting and uploading are rate limited per visitor. If the person who runs your Formwork installation has set up Cloudflare Turnstile, forms also ask for that check.
Hidden fields
The panel also lists Hidden fields, which collect values from the link (for example ?ref=newsletter) without showing a question. They are covered in Calculations, piping and hidden fields.
